The New Zealand Government confirmed that the Business Investor Visa applications will official open in November 2025, opening up doors for migrants with capital - creating opportunities especially for our Small businesses sector creating buy and sell opportunities.

There are two investment options for applicants: 1) $1m investment in an existing business, leading to a 3 year work to residence pathway. 2) $2m investment in an existing business, with a 12 month fast track to residence pathway. They can either acquire a business outright or purchase at least 25% of an established business to meet the minimum investment threshold. The visas are granted for up to four years and family members can be included in applications.

The business needs to have employed at least 5 full-time equivalent staff.

Are you looking to buy or sell the business that meets the investment criteria? there are number of things to consider as a buyer and seller:

  • What is the business valued at, does it require premium or discount adjustment?

  • Are there any known legal (customer/supplier/employees) and accounting & taxation issues to be addressed?

  • What is the relationship with the landlord and are there appropriate lease agreements and renewals in place?
